An affectation is a way of speaking, behaving, or dressing that seems unnatural because someone wants to appear more impressive, cultured, or unusual. It usually has a negative meaning and suggests a lack of sincerity.

affect を「影響する」だけでなく、やや文語で「〜のふりをする・わざと見せる」という顔まで覚えると入りやすいです。affectation はその名詞形で、自然に出る上品さや個性ではなく、あとから足した“演出された感じ”。形容詞 affected（わざとらしい）とセットで覚えると定着します。an affectation of sophistication, speak without affectation のように、話し方・態度・趣味の“気取り”でよく使われます。
