解説 Definition
嘘やごまかし、見え透いた作り話を指します。また、打楽器では主音の直前に小さな装飾音を入れ、二つの打音をほぼ続けて鳴らす奏法を指します。
Flam can mean false talk, deception, or something meant to trick people. In music, especially drumming, it also means a stroke made from two quick hits that are almost together. The second meaning is technical and used in percussion.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まずは flim-flam「ペテン・ごまかし」を先に覚え、その短い形が flam だと結び付けると、「中身より口先のはったり」という核が残りやすい。単独の flam は scam や nonsense ほど露骨な犯罪感より、うさんくさい誇張・見え透いたごまかし寄り。なお flame「炎」とつづりが近いが別語。ドラムでは flam stroke の形で出やすく、主音の直前に小さな予備打を入れて二つの打音をほぼ重ねる奏法、と使用場面ごとに分けて覚えると混同しにくい。
A good hook is `flim-flam`, which means trickery or nonsense; `flam` can feel like the shorter form. That helps you remember the sense of empty talk or a fake claim. Be careful not to mix it up with `flame`, which is a completely different word.

flam の「偽り」は英語 flim-flam の短縮形で、北欧語系にさかのぼる擬音的な反復語と考えられます。軽薄な音のひびきから「ごまかし」になったと見ると覚えやすく、flim-flam や flimflammery が近い仲間です。ドラムの flam は打音模倣の別系統です。
