revenue は古フランス語 revenue に由来し、さらにラテン語 revenire（re-「再び」＋ venire「来る」）へさかのぼります。もともと「戻ってくるもの」という意味だったので、事業から繰り返し入ってくるお金が「収益」と呼ばれるのは自然です。関連語は venue, convene です。
