ラテン語 comparare（対にして並べる）に由来。com-（共に）+ par（等しい）で「等しいもの同士を並べる」が原義。pair（ペア）や peer（同等の人）と同じ語根 par- を持つ。並べて見ることで違いや共通点を見出す行為が「比較する」の意味になった。
