describe はラテン語 describere に由来し、de-「すっかり」+ scribere「書く」から成ります。もとは「書いて写し取る・詳しく書き表す」で、そこから「説明する」の意味になりました。script や inscribe も同じ scrib- 系で、「書く」が核にある語です。
