To explain means to make something clear by giving details or reasons. It is commonly used when helping someone understand an idea, situation, or process.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
explain は simpler な英単語 plain「わかりやすい・はっきりした」と結びつけると覚えやすいです。つまり「相手にとって plain にする」感覚で、情報を並べるだけでなく、理由や仕組みがわかるようにする語。describe が見たままを描写する寄りなのに対し、explain は「なぜ・どうして」をほどく場面でよく使います。explain why / explain how / explain the reason、explain to 人 の形も一緒に固めると定着します。
Notice the word plain hidden in explain. A useful memory idea is that to explain something is to make it plain and clear for another person. It often goes with why and how, as in explain why or explain how.
