ラテン語 explanare（平らにする→はっきりさせる）から来た explanation に、形容詞語尾 -ory が付いた語です。ex-「外へ」+ planus「平らな」なので、「でこぼこをならして意味を見えやすくする」感覚から「説明的な」。関連語は explain, plain。
