exegeticalはギリシャ語exegeisthai「外へ導いて説明する」にさかのぼり、ex-「外へ」+ heg-「導く」が核です。exegesis や hegemony と同根で、意味を文の外へ勝手に足すのでなく、本文から導き出すのが釈義だとわかります。
Exegetical goes back to Greek exegeisthai, meaning "to lead out" or "explain," from ex- ("out") and a root meaning "to lead." It is related to exegesis, and more distantly to hegemony through the same leading root. The original idea is drawing meaning out from a text rather than adding it from outside.
