A reactant is a substance that takes part in a chemical reaction. In chemistry, reactants are the starting materials that change into new substances during the reaction.

「react」を知っていれば中心はすぐ取れます。reactant は「反応する側にいる物質」。化学では products（生成物）とセットで出るので、『reactants が反応して products になる』という流れで丸ごと覚えると残りやすいです。語尾の -ant も assistant などと同じで「その役割のもの」と見ておくと判別しやすいです。似た reagent は「試薬」で、実験で加える役割に焦点がある語。reactant は反応式の当事者そのもの、という差を意識すると混同しません。

reactant は、ラテン語 re-「戻って」+ act「動かす、行う」+ -ant「〜するもの」から成ります。『作用を受けて反対に働き返すもの』という骨格が見えるので、化学で相互に反応へ入る『反応物』の意味がつかみやすい語です。reaction や interact も同じ act 系です。
