cento はラテン語 cento「継ぎはぎの布・寄せ集め」に由来し、そこから英語で「他人の詩句を縫い合わせた詩」の意味になりました。布片を縫い合わせる比喩そのままの語で、centonize という関連語を見ると成り立ちがよく分かります。
