覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
anthology は、1人の作家の1作品ではなく、editor が複数の poem・essay・short story を選んで1冊に編んだ本だと場面ごと覚えると残りやすい。poetry anthology, an anthology of Japanese literature の形でよく見る。collection よりも「寄せ集め」ではなく「選集」の感じが強い。なお語尾が -logy でも biology のような学問名ではない、という例外として覚えると混同しにくい。
Think of an `anthology` as a carefully chosen collection, not just a random group. You often see it with poems, essays, or short stories, like `a poetry anthology`. Also, do not let `-logy` confuse you here: it is not the name of a school subject like `biology`.

anthologyはギリシャ語anthologiaに由来し、anthos「花」+ logia「集めたもの」から成ります。もとは「花を摘んで作る花束」で、詩や名文をえりすぐって束ねた比喩が今の意味になりました。anthocyaninのantho-やbiologyの-logyと同根です。
Anthology comes from Greek anthologia, made from anthos "flower" and a form meaning "collection" or "gathering." It first meant a collection of flowers, like a bouquet. Later this became a metaphor for a collection of chosen poems or writings, as if they were the best flowers picked together. Related roots appear in anthocyanin and in -logy words such as biology.
