語源
customary は custom + -ary。custom は古フランス語を経てラテン語 consuetudo「習慣」に由来し、さらに con-「共に」+ suescere「慣れる」へつながります。accustom や costume も同根で、皆が慣れて身につけたやり方だから「習慣的な」になると見えてきます。
