siren はギリシャ神話の Seiren に由来し、もとは歌声で人を誘う怪物の名でした。接頭辞・接尾辞で分ける語ではなく、sirenic や sirenian も同じ名から派生しています。警報装置が siren と呼ばれるのも、人を強く引きつける音という神話のイメージが移ったからです。
Siren comes from Greek `Seiren`, the name of the mythical creatures whose songs attracted sailors. It was first a proper name from myth, not a word built from smaller English parts.
