解説 Definition
サイレンとは人々に注意や警告を促すために鳴る大きな音で、火災や自然災害、緊急車両などの危険を知らせる装置です。通常は高く響く音を繰り返して鳴らし、遠くにいる人にも聞こえるように設計されています。聞いた人が即座に避難したり安全を確認したりするきっかけになります。

siren はギリシャ神話の Seiren に由来し、もとは歌声で人を誘う怪物の名でした。接頭辞・接尾辞で分ける語ではなく、sirenic や sirenian も同じ名から派生しています。警報装置が siren と呼ばれるのも、人を強く引きつける音という神話のイメージが移ったからです。
