essay の語源・成り立ち Etymology
フランス語 essai（試み）からラテン語 exagium（計量）に遡る。ex-（外へ）+ agere（動かす）で「試しに考えを外に出す」が原義。関連語: assay（分析）、examine。試しに書く＝随筆という意味のつながりが見える。
Essay came into English through French essai, meaning "attempt" or "trial." It goes back to Latin exagium, a word for weighing or testing. The sense moved from "a trial" to "an attempt in writing," which is why related words like assay still keep the older idea of testing.
