assay は古フランス語 essai「試み、試験」に由来し、さらに俗ラテン語 exagium「重さを量ること」にさかのぼります。essay も同根で、もとは金属を秤にかけて質を見きわめる行為だったため、「試験・分析する」という意味になりました。
Assay comes from Old French essai, meaning "trial" or "test," and goes back further to a Late Latin word linked to weighing. It is closely related to essay, which also began with the idea of an attempt or trial. Because testing metals often meant checking their weight and quality, assay came to mean careful examination or analysis.
