解説 Definition
考え込んでいて物思いに沈んだという意味の形容詞。沈黙しがちで深く考える様子を表す。また、抱卵する鶏などの状態を表すこともある。
Broody can describe someone who is quiet, serious, and lost in dark or deep thoughts. It can also describe a bird, especially a hen, that is sitting on eggs and trying to hatch them. The human meaning is much more common in everyday English.

brood / brooding を知っていると覚えやすい語です。brood over ... で「…をくよくよ考え込む」なので、broody は「何かを内に抱えて黙り込み、物思いに沈んだ感じ」とつながります。人に使うと gloomy や moody に近いですが、感情を外へ爆発させるより、静かにこもるニュアンス。a broody teenager のように使えます。もう一つは a broody hen で「抱卵中の」。卵でも悩みでも、何かをじっと抱え込んでいるイメージで二つの意味をまとめると残りやすいです。
