ray は古フランス語 rai を経て、ラテン語 radius「棒・車輪のスポーク」にさかのぼります。radius や radial と同根で、まっすぐ細く伸びる形の連想から、光が筋になって伸びる「光線」の意味になりました。
Ray came through Old French rai from Latin radius, which meant "rod," "spoke," or another straight stick-like line. Because of that image of a thin line spreading outward, the word came to mean a beam of light. Radius and radial are close relatives.
