この名詞は細く伸びた光や熱の筋を意味します。太陽や照明器具からまっすぐに差し込む光線や、放射状に広がるエネルギーの流れを指して使われます。日常では太陽が雲の間から差す光や、望遠鏡で捉える宇宙からの放射にも用いられます。
A ray is a narrow line of light, heat, or energy that travels from one point to another. It is often used in contexts such as sunlight, lasers, or X-rays. In everyday English, it commonly refers to light.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
ray は sun ray / rays of light / X-ray をまとめて覚えると定着しやすい語。shine や glow が「光っている状態」なのに対し、ray はそこから外へ伸びる「一本の筋」。beam も近いが、beam のほうが太く強い光束を言いやすく、ray は細く差し込む光線の感じ。特に the sun’s rays, a ray of hope の形が頻出で、物理の light ray でも出る。radiation, radial など radi- 系を見たら「放射状に広がる線」の仲間として整理すると忘れにくい。

ray の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ray は古フランス語 rai を経て、ラテン語 radius「棒・車輪のスポーク」にさかのぼります。radius や radial と同根で、まっすぐ細く伸びる形の連想から、光が筋になって伸びる「光線」の意味になりました。
Ray came through Old French rai from Latin radius, which meant "rod," "spoke," or another straight stick-like line. Because of that image of a thin line spreading outward, the word came to mean a beam of light. Radius and radial are close relatives.
