技術語の jitter は、通信信号・クロック・パケット到着間隔などが理想のタイミングから不規則にずれる現象です。平均的な遅延ではなく、時間間隔のばらつきが音声、映像、同期処理を不安定にする点が中心です。

jitter は20世紀アメリカ英語で、語源は未詳ですが、方言 chitter「かたかた震える」が変化した語と考えられます。細かく震える感じがそのまま「神経の震え」や機械の「細かなぶれ」に広がったので、jittery や jitters も同根です。
