precept は concept とつづりが似ていますが、concept が「頭の中の考え・概念」なのに対し、precept は「行動を導く教え・戒め」。pre- を「前もって」と見て、「何かする前に思い出すルール」と置くと残りやすいです。宗教・道徳の文脈で出やすく、moral precepts / religious precepts、follow or observe a precept の形で覚えると使い所も見えます。rule より硬く、principle よりも『守るべき教え』の感じが強い語です。

ラテン語praeceptum「前もって与えられる教え」が語源で、prae-「前に」+ capere「つかむ・受け取る」から成る。行動前に心へ先取りして入れる教え、という感覚が「戒め」につながる。同根語にaccept、conceptがある。
