portmanteau はフランス語 porte-manteau からで、porter「運ぶ」+ manteau「外套」。もとは外套を運ぶ旅行かばんで、そこから「二つの語を一つに詰める」比喩が生まれ、portable や transport と同じ port- を見れば納得できます。
Portmanteau comes from French porte-manteau, literally "carry-cloak," from porter "to carry" and manteau "cloak." It first meant a travel case for carrying clothes. Later, the idea was used for a word made by packing two words into one. The same port- root appears in portable and transport.
