Immigration is the process of coming to live in a foreign country permanently. The word can also refer to the laws, systems, and official controls connected with people entering a country.

immigration はラテン語 immigrare「中へ移る」からで、im- は in-「中へ」、migrate は「移る」です。さらに -ation が付いて「移り入ること」となり、外から国の中へ入って定住するという今の意味が、そのまま語の形に表れています。関連語は migrate、emigration。
Immigration comes from Latin immigrare, meaning "to move into," from in- "into" and migrare "to move." The noun ending -ation was added to name the act or process. Its modern sense of people moving into a country closely follows that original idea.
