解説 Definition
カメラで同じ被写体を、露出や焦点などの設定を少しずつ変えながら複数回撮る方法です。あとで最適な写真を選んだり、画像を合成したりするために用いられ、明暗差の大きい場面で特に役立ちます。
Bracketing is a method of taking several versions of the same shot with different settings, such as exposure. It is common in photography when the best setting is uncertain. This helps the photographer choose the best result later.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
bracket を「両側からはさむ枠」として覚えると定着しやすいです。写真の bracketing は、1枚だけ決め打ちするのでなく、基準の設定を中心に明るめ・暗め、手前・奥などへ少しずつ振って複数枚撮ること。-ing なので「その撮り方・その操作」を表します。burst mode のような単なる連写ではなく、設定を意図的に変えて“安全策を取る”撮影だと押さえると混同しません。HDR や露出ミス防止の場面と結びつけると記憶に残ります。

bracket に -ing が付いた語で、bracket はもともと「支え金具・かっこ」を表した。語源は中世フランス語系 braguette とされ、両側から支える形から「範囲をはさむ」の意が生まれ、写真では基準露出の上下をはさんで撮ることを指す。関連語は bracket, bracketed。
Bracketing comes from bracket with the suffix -ing. Bracket originally meant a supporting piece or a pair of marks that hold something on both sides, and it likely comes from a medieval French form. From this idea of enclosing or setting limits, the word developed the sense of putting things within a range. That is how it came to be used for taking values or shots above and below a central point.
