ギリシャ語 paragraphos がラテン語・古フランス語を経て英語に入り、para-「そばに」+ graph-「書く」から成ります。もとは本文の脇に付す区切りの印で、そこから文章の切れ目である「段落」の意味になりました。関連語は graphic, biography です。
"Paragraph" comes from Greek paragraphos, which passed through Latin and French before entering English. It combines para-, meaning "beside," and graph-, meaning "write." At first it meant a mark written beside the text to show a division, and then it came to mean the section of writing itself; "graphic" and "biography" share the same writing root.
