解説 Definition
blockは「ブロック」「塊」「区画」など多様な意味を持つ名詞・動詞である。名詞では木や石などの四角い塊、都市の街区（ブロック）、または妨害物を指す。動詞では「遮る」「妨げる」という意味で使われる。
A block is a solid piece of material, often roughly rectangular, or a section of a city enclosed by streets. It can also mean an obstruction; as a verb, it means to stop movement, access, progress, or a view.

中期英語「blok」を経て、古フランス語「bloc（丸太・塊）」から借入。さらに遡ると中高ドイツ語「bloch（丸太）」に由来する。「大きな塊」が原義で、そこから街区・障害物・積み木など多義に発展。blockade（封鎖）やblockage（詰まり）が同根の関連語。
Block entered Middle English as blok, probably through Old French bloc, meaning a log or solid mass, with connections to Middle High German bloch, “log.” The original idea of a large, compact piece produced the senses of a wooden or stone block and later an area of a city treated as one unit. From the idea of a solid object in the way came the verb meaning “obstruct.”
