obstacle はフランス語 obstacle を経て、ラテン語 obstaculum に由来します。ob-「〜に逆らって」＋stare「立つ」から成り、『前に立って進行を妨げるもの』がそのまま『障害物』になりました。関連語に stable、status があります。
Obstacle came through French from Latin obstaculum. It is related to ob- meaning "against" and stare meaning "to stand," so the original image is something standing in the way.
