ラテン語 obstructio にさかのぼり、ob-「ふさぐ方向へ」+ struere「積む・築く」からできた語です。同語根に structure, construct があり、道に物を“積んでふさぐ”感覚が、障害物・妨害という意味につながりました。
Obstruction comes from Latin obstructio, from ob- meaning "against" or "in the way" and struere meaning "to build" or "pile up." The original image was of piling something up to block a path. That physical idea later widened into the general sense of a barrier or an act of preventing progress; structure and construct are related words.
