塞栓症
解説 Definition
血管やリンパ管が血栓などの異物で塞がった状態です。塞栓による血流障害により、様々な医学的な問題が生じる疾患です。
An embolism is a serious medical condition in which something, usually a blood clot, blocks a blood vessel. This blockage can stop normal blood flow and damage the body. The word is mainly used in medical contexts and is not common in everyday conversation.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
embolism は thrombosis（血栓症）との対比で覚えると残りやすい語です。thrombosis はその場で血栓ができて詰まるのに対し、embolism は血栓・空気・脂肪などが血流に乗って移動し、別の場所で引っかかって詰まるイメージ。医療英語では pulmonary embolism（肺塞栓症）が特に頻出なので、この形ごと覚えると定着しやすいです。単なる blockage ではなく、『流れてきたものによる詰まり』という動きのある意味を意識すると、似た語と混同しにくくなります。
Remember it by contrast with `thrombosis`. In `embolism`, something moves through the blood and gets stuck somewhere else, so the key image is movement before blockage. The very common phrase `pulmonary embolism` is a useful chunk to memorize.

embolismはギリシャ語embolismosにさかのぼり、en-「中へ」+ bol-「投げる」から成ります。原義は「中に投げ込まれた栓」で、ballisticsやsymbolと同じ語根を思うと、血管をふさぐ異物が内へ入り込む像がつかめます。
Embolism goes back to Greek embolismos, from parts meaning "in" and "to throw." Its original sense was something thrown or put into a place, especially a plug or stopper. In medical use, this became the idea of material entering and blocking a blood vessel.
