pulmonary はラテン語 pulmonarius に由来し、pulmon-「肺」+ -ary「〜に関する」から成る語です。つまり「肺に属する」が原義で、医学語らしい硬さも語源を知ると素直です。pulmonology や cardiopulmonary にも同じ pulmon- が見えます。
