alcohol はアラビア語 al-kuhl（細かい粉）にさかのぼり、蒸留で得る「精製されたもの」を経て酒精の意味になりました。-ism はギリシャ語由来の「状態」を表す接尾辞で、つまり alcoholism は「アルコール状態に陥ること」。alcoholic も同根です。

Alcohol goes back to Arabic al-kuhl, first meaning a very fine powder, then something refined or distilled, and later distilled spirit.
