apologise はギリシャ語 apologia にさかのぼり、apo-「離して」+ logos「言葉・理屈」から成ります。本来は「弁明の言葉」で、そこから謝罪の言葉という今の意味に寄りました。apology や logic も同じ logos 系です。
"Apologise" goes back to Greek apologia, from apo- "away, off" and logos "speech" or "reason." At first it meant a speech of defense or explanation, not an admission of guilt.
