atone はラテン語由来ではなく英語の句 at one「一つに、一致して」から縮まった語です。at + one が「ばらばらになった関係を再び一つにする」感覚を持つため、償うは本来ただ罰を受けるのでなく、乱れを元に戻すことでした。at one や atonement が同系です。
