フランス語 portraiture に由来し、さらに portrait はラテン語 protrahere「引き出す・描き出す」にさかのぼります。-ure は「行為・結果」を表すので、「姿を描き出したもの」から「肖像画・肖像表現」の意味になりました。関連語は portrait, portray。
Portraiture came into English from French portraiture. Its deeper source is Latin protrahere, meaning "to draw forth" or "bring out," which also gave English portrait and portray.
