portray は古フランス語 portraire を経て、ラテン語 pro-「前へ」+ trahere「引く」にさかのぼります。もとは「外へ引き出して形を見せる」ことで、そこから人物や情景を「描き出す」の意になりました。同根語に portrait, attract があります。
Portray comes from Old French portraire, going back to Latin pro- meaning "forward" and trahere meaning "to draw" or "pull." The early sense was to draw something out so its form could be seen.
