古フランス語 portraire を経て、ラテン語 pro-「前へ」+ trahere「引く」に由来します。形や特徴を前に引き出して見せる発想から、言葉や作品で描写する意味になりました。
Portray comes from Old French portraire, which goes back to Latin pro- meaning "forward" and trahere meaning "to draw" or "pull."
