faulty は fault「欠点」+ -y「〜に満ちた」。fault は古フランス語 faute、さらにラテン語 fallere「つまずかせる・欺く」にさかのぼり、「人を誤らせるもの」が欠陥の意味へ。fail や default も同根で、単なるミスより“うまく働けない原因”を感じさせる。
