If someone is cognizant, they are aware of something and understand it clearly. It is often used in formal English when talking about facts, risks, duties, or other important matters. This word is more formal than aware.

cogni- は cognition（認知）や recognize（認識する）と同じ『頭で知る・把握する』仲間だとまとめて覚えると定着しやすい。意味は aware に近いですが、cognizant のほうが硬めで、事実やリスクをきちんと認識している響きがあります。be cognizant of ... の形が非常に多いので、be aware of ... のフォーマル版として覚えるとよいです。conscious が『意識がある・自覚している』寄りなのに対し、こちらは『情報として理解している』感覚です。

cognizant の語源・成り立ち Etymology
cognizant はラテン語 cognoscere「知る」に由来し、co-「ともに」+ gnoscere「知る・見分ける」が土台です。情報を合わせて把握する感覚から、「認識している・気づいている」になりました。cognition や incognito にも同じ「知る」の根が入っています。
Cognizant comes from Latin cognoscere, meaning "to get to know" or "recognize." It is based on co- and a root meaning "know," the same root seen in cognition and incognito. The idea developed from coming to know something fully to being aware of it.
