actual は後期ラテン語 actualis に由来し、act-「行う・動かす」に形容詞語尾 -ual（-al 系）が付いて「行為に関する」が出発点。act や action と同根で、頭の中の可能性でなく「実際に行われたもの」だから「現実の」になる。
