biology の bio- が「生命・生きること」だと分かれば、biography は「人の生を文字にしたもの」と捉えやすいです。-graphy は photograph, geography などにもある「書く・記録する」系の形。つまり biography は“life + writing”で「生涯の記録」。単なる profile より長く本格的で、autobiography なら「自伝」、biography は他人が書く「伝記」。read a biography of ... / write a biography of ... の形で覚えると使いやすいです。
