Hagiography originally means a biography of a saint or holy person. More generally, it can mean writing that praises someone too much and ignores their faults. It is often used in literary, historical, or critical discussion.

biography, autobiography, geography などの -graphy は「書かれたもの・記述」の仲間。hagiography もまず「人物について書く文類」と押さえると入りやすいです。違いは biography が比較的中立な伝記なのに対し、hagiography は saint のように崇める対象を称賛寄りに描く点。a hagiography of ... の形で出やすく、単なる history ではなく、欠点をあまり扱わない「持ち上げすぎの人物伝」という皮肉な意味でも使われるので、そのニュアンスまで一緒に覚えると定着します。

「hagiography」はギリシャ語 hagio-「聖なる」+ -graphy「書くこと」に由来します。つまり「聖なる人について書くこと」で、hagiology や biography と並べると、聖人伝が単なる伝記でなく敬虔さを帯びた記述だと見えてきます。
`Hagiography` comes from Greek parts meaning "holy" (`hagio-`) and "writing" (`-graphy`). At first it meant writing about saints or holy people. Because those writings were often respectful and admiring, the word later also gained the sense of overly praising biography; compare `biography` and `hagiology`.
