sofa はトルコ語 sofa を経て入り、さらにアラビア語 suffa「腰掛け・長椅子」にさかのぼります。はっきりした接頭辞分解はなく、suffa や古い綴り sopha が近い同根形です。もとは床より少し高い座る場所で、語源を知ると sofa が「くつろぐ段差のある席」だったと見えてきます。
Sofa came into English through Turkish sofa, from Arabic suffa, meaning a bench or raised sitting place. It was not originally a word for a soft modern couch, but for a place to sit slightly above the floor. The meaning later shifted to the upholstered seat we know today. An older spelling, sopha, shows the same origin.
