解説 Definition
中世の騎馬戦士で、王や領主の命令に従って戦う身分の人。封建社会で武勇と礼儀を重んじ、騎士道の理想に従って弱者を守るとされる。誠実さや名誉を大切にして行動することが期待された。
A knight was a soldier in the past, usually on horseback, who served a king or lord. In stories, knights are often shown as brave and honorable. In modern use, the word can also refer to a man who has received an official honor in some countries.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず night と見分けるのが第一歩。knight は先頭の k を読まないので発音はほぼ同じですが、つづりに k がある方が「中世っぽい固い語」と覚えると残りやすいです。set knight / brave knight / become a knight の形で出やすく、王・剣・馬・城と一緒に思い浮かべると定着します。現代では a knight in shining armor のように「弱者を助ける頼れる人」の比喩でも使われます。
First separate knight from night. They sound almost the same, but knight has a silent k, and that old-fashioned spelling matches an old-fashioned image: horse, sword, castle, king. The phrase "a knight in shining armor" is also a useful memory hook.

knight の語源・成り立ち Etymology
古英語 cniht（少年、召使い）から。元は若い従者・小姓の意で、中世に騎馬武者の称号へと格上げされた。ドイツ語 Knecht（下僕）と同根。kの黙字はかつて発音されていた名残。関連語: knighthood（騎士の位）。身分の低い者が高貴な称号に変化した珍しい語。
From Old English cniht, which first meant "boy" or "servant." In the Middle Ages, it rose in status and came to mean a mounted warrior of high rank. It is related to German Knecht, meaning "servant." The silent k in knight shows that the first sound was once pronounced.
