divan はトルコ語 divan をフランス語経由で借りた語で、さらにペルシア語 dīwān「評議会・役所の帳簿」にさかのぼります。評議の部屋の壁際に長い座席が置かれたことから、語が部屋の名から長椅子の名へ移りました。関連語は diwan、dewan。
Divan came into English through French from Turkish divan, and it goes back further to Persian diwan. In Persian, the word first meant a council or a register used by an office.
