divan はトルコ語 divan をフランス語経由で借りた語で、さらにペルシア語 dīwān「評議会・役所の帳簿」にさかのぼります。評議の部屋の壁際に長い座席が置かれたことから、語が部屋の名から長椅子の名へ移りました。関連語は diwan、dewan。
Divan came into English through French from Turkish divan, and it goes back further to Persian diwan. In Persian, the word first meant a council or a register used by an office. Because council rooms often had long seats along the walls, the name shifted from the room or council to the couch itself. Related forms include diwan and dewan.
