overwrought は over-（過度に）+ wrought（work の古い過去分詞）から成り、古英語 wyrcan「働かせる」に由来します。もとは「働かせすぎた」なので、そこから神経まで酷使されて張りつめた、という意味になりました。関連語は work, wrought です。
