覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

flay は skin(皮)を対象にして「皮をはぐ」という強い動作を表す。flay an animal や flay the skin from a body の形で使われる。peel が果物や野菜の皮をむく日常語なのに対し、flay は動物の皮を刃物ではぐ残酷で激しい場面の語、と区別すると定着しやすい。

Picture someone using a knife to flay an animal by removing its skin. Unlike the everyday verb “peel,” which is commonly used for fruit and vegetables, this word suggests a violent removal of animal or human skin.

flay の語源・成り立ち Etymology

flay は古英語 flēan「皮をはぐ」にさかのぼるゲルマン系の語。もともと外皮をべりっとはぎ取る動作を表し、そこから比喩的に「痛烈に攻撃する」にも広がった。同系語に古ノルド語 flá がある。

It goes back to the Old English flēan, meaning “to strip off the skin.” The physical idea of stripping something painfully later produced the figurative sense of attacking someone with severe criticism.
