ラテン語 capere（捕まえる）に由来する俗語 cop（つかまえる）から、「人を捕まえる者」の意味で警官を指すようになった。copper（捕まえる人）の短縮形とも。capture（捕獲）や capable（把握できる）も同じ語根を持つ。
Cop first appeared in English slang as a verb meaning "to seize" or "catch," probably from a root related to Latin capere, "to take."
