policeはギリシャ語politeia（市民の統治）からラテン語politia、フランス語policeを経て英語に入った。語根polisは「都市」を意味し、politics（政治）やmetropolis（大都市）と同根。officerはラテン語officium（職務）由来。つまり「都市の秩序を守る職務の人」が原義。
