幾何で、円や曲線上の二点を結ぶ直線部分を指す語です。特に円について説明するときによく使われ、中心を通る弦は直径になります。音楽の「和音」とはまったく別の意味です。

chord は音楽の「コード」だけで覚えるとずれるので、幾何では「弦をピンと張って2点を結ぶ線」と考える。円周上の2点にひもを張ると、弧ではなくまっすぐな線分ができる。それが chord「弦」。中心を通れば一番長い弦、つまり直径になる。music chord は複数音の和音だが、この語義では響きではなく、曲線上の2点を直線で結ぶ図形用語だと切り分ける。cord（ひも）と似るが、数学では h 付きの chord と覚えるとよい。

chord はギリシャ語 khorde「弦」がラテン語 chorda、古フランス語 corde を経て入った語で、もとは「弦」そのものを指しました。cord や clavichord と同じ根を持ち、複数の弦を同時に鳴らす感覚から、音楽で『和音』を表すようになりました。
Chord comes from Greek khorde, meaning "string," through Latin chorda and Old French corde. At first it referred to a string itself, especially on a musical instrument.
