音楽における主要な音の流れ。複数の楽器が奏でる曲の中で、特に耳に留まる音の連続のこと。
A melody is the main tune of a song or piece of music, the part that is easiest to hear and remember. It is the line of notes that forms the musical theme. The word is common when talking about singing, composing, or listening to music.

melody はギリシャ語 melos「歌・節回し」+ aoide/ode「歌」から来た語です。ode や rhapsody と同じ「歌」の系統にあり、意味の核が最初から「音の並び」ではなく「歌われる流れ」だとわかると、旋律のなめらかさが腑に落ちます。
