古代ギリシャでは、語り手が叙事詩を朗唱するために整えられた詩の形式を指していました。その後、感情豊かで自由な構成を持ち、激情的な表現を特徴とする音楽形式をさすようになりました。現在では比喩的に、熱狂的な賞賛や感動を表す文や演説にも用いられます。
