lint は中英語で「紡ぐ前の亜麻」を指し、古英語 lin、さらにラテン語 linum「亜麻・麻布」にさかのぼるとされます。もとは布の材料名なので、そこから「ほぐれた繊維くず」「糸くず」へ意味が移ったと分かる語です。関連語は linen, linseed。
