guitar の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ギリシャ語 kithara（竪琴）がアラビア語 qītār を経てスペイン語 guitarra となり英語に入った。ラテン語 cithara も同根で、ツィター（zither）は同語源の楽器名。古代の弦楽器名が形を変えながら現代のギターまで受け継がれた。
Guitar entered English from Spanish guitarra. That form developed through earlier Romance usage from Latin cithara, the name of a stringed instrument, ultimately from Greek kithara. Arabic qīthāra was also important in the word's transmission and history in the Iberian Peninsula. The ancient instruments were not identical to the modern guitar, but their names continued through centuries of changing stringed-instrument forms. Zither is a distant word relative from the same Greek source.
